Save Money This Winter
• Change your thermostat from 74 to 70F in winter and save $37. To maximize your energy savings,
set your thermostat at 68 to 70F during the day and 60 to 65F at night. Every degree under 70F
saves 10% on the heating portion of your electric bill.
• Portable heaters are great for spot heating, but don’t overdo it. Running a 1,500-watt resistance
heater 24/7 costs $149 a month.
• Everyone likes a hot shower, but make sure your water heater temperature is set at 120 degrees. Water set
at 120 degrees will cost you about $242 per year versus water set at 140 degrees which can cost $327 per
year. Save $85 and spend $0! Also consider installing low-flow shower heads to save water and electricity.
The simplest tip for the winter? Reduce your thermostat when you leave home.
